Middaugh, Elias - Stand (Inn)
Research done in January & February 2016 brought information to light that may disprove some of the information originally posted on this page. There isn't any proof at this time to substantiate the fact Elias Middaugh served in General Sullivan's Army. There is also no proof that the Inn was built in 1791 or that Elias Middaugh was in the area at that early date. -- Mary Ellen P. Kunst
This is an excerpt of a diary written by Emma Pease Wells. Greciantown and Dutchtown were both hamlets within the Town of Chemung, located on St. Rt. 427, (Wilawana Rd). The Middaugh Stand was located 1/2 mile west of the Chemung River Bridge on the left side of the road. Some of the building was saved and today is part of another home located nearby. The Diary is property of the Chemung Co. Historical Society.

Elias Middaugh a colonial settler of the Town of Chemung lived on the west side of the Chemung River on the property known as the "Kilpatrick Farm". He was a soldier in General Sullivan's Army. He is buried in the Dutchtown Cemetery, Town of Chemung, New York.
The following photographs and newspaper clipping tell of the hotel that Elias owned and operated. The ferry was near by and the hotel served the people coming to and from town. The years of operation are not known at this time.
