Rose Valley, Hamlet in the Town of Chemung, New York
Rose Valley is a hamlet in the Town of Chemung located on County Route 60 near the intersection with Williams Rd, west of Chemung proper and Narrows Hill. Located in this vicinity was the District #5 "Rose Valley" School House and the "Rose Valley Inn" which consisted of a restaurant, gas station and garage. It was in this area and to the east where the New Chemung Indian Village, also known as the "Iroquois War Town", was located. More information will be added as it is becomes available.
Information about the first photo in the gallery, written by Susan Aumick:
This picture and article of the Rose Valley District #5 School House located between Lowman & Chemung, was in the Morning Times newspaper on Saturday, Sept. 9th, 2009. This article was clipped by Dudley French and given to Mike Aumick to copy for his collection. Dudley French wrote above this newspaper clipping that his dad, Rodney French, lived in a house on the left and attended grade school here... and after that he started riding the trolley car to Waverly to attend high school. He had to walk 2 miles one way to Chemung to catch the trolley.
The origin of the original photo and the date it was taken is unknown. This little building was also once used as an ice cream stand after it was no longer used as a school. The flood of 1972 moved this building from it's original location... and then the flood of 1975 moved it once again. Though it is in poor condition, it still remains standing along the CO Rt. 60 between Lowman & Chemung. It is no longer in use.
Information will be added as it becomes available.
