Bridges Over Chemung River
The first suspension bridge lasted 1875-1912. The second bridge was opened Jan 1, 1912. Thanks M. Tuccinardi |
Trolleys:
In 1907, the trolley line from Waverly to Wellsburg, 9 miles, was open - run by the W. S. A. Traction Co. In 1909 that 9 miles was taken over by the E C &W. March 31, 1930, was the day of the last run. |
This was the second underpass, that was built by the Railroad, behind Elsie Thomas's house in Chemung. The first underpass was larger and allowed for the passage of farm tractors coming from the Thomas farm, to make their way along a lane on the south side of the RR tracks, that led to the fields located on the Thomas's Chemung river flats farmland, located across the road from Chemung Speedrome. The second one (as pictured here) was smaller and was used as an underpass for the cattle to pass under the railroad tracks, so they could make their way to the fields on the river flats where they could graze. Once the Chemung crossover bridge was built, Thomas's no longer had a use for the underpass because the cows could no longer access the fields from there... and that was because the lane they walked in order to get to the fields, had been cut off by the crossover. My husband Mike Aumick used to go there every day while this underpass was being built, to watch the construction of it... and he took this picture. You can't see this underpass anymore, from I-86 or from the Chemung crossover, because it is covered with brush and weeds. … Susan Aumick
