BIG NIGHTS - Amphibian Migrations and Road Crossings in the Lower Chemung River Valley, Chemung, NY
The best article I could find on the "Big Nights" is by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, NYSDEC. I have experienced several of these nights, driving home on a dark, rainy night in the spring and suddenly seeing many frogs crossing the road in what appears to be a frenzy. I never understood what was happening until much later. I never saw a salamander crossing, but it became apparent to me when one morning I found a lost spotted salamander trying to squeeze under our garage door and doing so unsuccessfully. With the help of my husband, it was moved to a safe place out on the river bank. I began doing research and found that the Big Nights are when the amphibian migrations and breeding occur. The more awareness that is reached might save many of these critters who sadly find their way under car tires. Check this website for much more information and you will find an email address to send your email address to, if you would like to be placed on their list. The DEC will let you know when the Big Nights are most apt to occur. I for one will watch this more closely in the future. http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/51925.html
