Fall Foliage 2017
In & Around Chemung, NY
With a limited display of fall foliage this year, I couldn't very well post photos of green. In many areas, the hillsides resembled the variations of greens in the springtime and it wasn't until the weekend of October 21 & 22 the leaves on the hillsides began looking like an artist's palette. The higher elevations have had more color at an earlier date and so my husband and I took to the hills the last couple of weeks searching out photos for this year's Fall Foliage page. We also took excursions to two covered bridges, Luther Mills, PA and Newfield, NY. I think it's interesting that both bridges are located within 1/2 hours drive from downtown Chemung, one to the north and one to the south.
I have never heard of covered bridges in the history of the Town of Chemung. In fact, with Baldwin and Wynkoop Creeks winding through our town, I don't know much about the bridges in our town at all, except for the series of Chemung river bridges. I wonder what the construction of the original bridges were that allowed passage over streams? Perhaps they were built of simple and crude planks that would be easy to replace when they were washed away. Whatever they chose, bridges were vital to the development of the local economy.
So, I decided to add photos of the covered bridges this year that are located closest to our town of Chemung. There is something romantic about the old bridges and the construction of these magnificent structures is a testament to the knowledge and hard work of the men who designed and built them. I hope you enjoy them as much as us.
