Valley View - Locale in the Town of Chemung, NY
Valley View is a locale situated on the East side of the Narrows Hill, in the Town of Chemung, New York. Located west of Chemung Proper and north of County Route 60. It may have been named by a early settler as their homestead. The name is self explanatory. In the early years of settlement by the white man, the mountains were stripped of all the trees. Massive sized hemlocks grew at one time in this area. They were felled to build homes in the beginning. Soon the settlers realized the value of the logs and began cutting them all down and marketing them. They even used bark for tanneries. As a result, the hills were bare, and as a result, causing erosion and changing the flows of the creeks and river because of quick run off. It took a long time to grow trees back on the hills and mountains. Because of the name Valley View, I have to wonder if the trees were gone on this hillside and of course the valley view must have been magnificent!
