Hamlets & Locales in the Town of Chemung, New York
It is very difficult to say whether some of the pocket communities were actually considered hamlets of the Town of Chemung. They functioned as their own community with post offices and school houses and with general stores. Therefore I feel it is important to list them with the best information I can provide.
Also, I'm including the following list of Locale's as notated on the Town of Chemung 1869 map taken from the 1869 Chemung County, NY Atlas. They are areas named perhaps by the original settlers and named for the locale, not necessarily for the settlers surnames living there. They were not necessarily hamlets or even pocket communities. There were no post offices and in most cases a school house was not connected with the name either. Back in the day, there were no county routes or street signs. But rather references made by locale. That is my guess. Either way they are very interesting and I am quite fascinated by them. I hope you enjoy them as much as me. -Mary Ellen P. Kunst

All the locales and hamlets have been marked in red on this map so you can better locate them, except for West Hill. Clicking on the image will enlarge it. Or perhaps zooming in your page may work as well. Unfortunately my website does not have the capabilities to zoom.
