Jacob Lowman Home, Chemung, NY
More information will be added on the Lowman's as time permits and as information becomes available.
The two house's below are the same house. Jacob Lowman built his home, near the Baldwin Creek in the Town of Chemung, NY in the year 1819. At that time a federal style home was popular. Front gable, full two stories, 3 facade symmetrical design, a very stately home! In the 1880's the house took on a new roof line, in the Italianate design. If you notice the front of the house still has the portico and front door on the far left of the house with 3 windows still intact. The porch roof on the side of the house was altered as well as the roof, and partial 3rd floor was added with small windows in symmetrical design with the rest of the house, becoming a more stately home! This type of change took place more than we realize. It was less money to change the roof or other elements of a home, than to build a new one!
