Information on the Manning Family of Chemung, NY by Mike Tuccinardi
John P Manning and wife Mary had 4 children Sarah b 1840; Morgan S. born 1844; Winifred b. 1851, who married into the Joslyn family, but she lived in Chemung; Adelia or Adeline b 1849 married a Bovier of Elmira, took ill, went to stay with her sister, a Mrs. Joslyn of Chemung, at the advice of her doctor, where she died few days later on July 29, 1897, outliving Sarah because only Morgan and Winifred are listed as survivors in the obit in the Waverly Free Press, and later on I find it was Winifred Joslin in the censuses.
Adeline's circumstances of death are important because in the 1900 census, Morgan Joslin (who, in another census, has a middle name of S) and John N. Joslin are listed as nephews living with Morgan S. Manning and his 2nd wife Harriet B.(1900 census); Morgan Manning's 1st wife Flora (Florence died in 1884); Morgan Joslin and John Joslin were brothers born a year apart 1875 and 1876, it just says NY.
What all this means is, John P. Manning and wife Mary bought the farm from Baldwin sometime between 1853 and 1869. Since a Morgan S. Manning is listed as a head of household in the 1880 census with wife Flora, Morgan S. Manning must have inherited the farm from John P. Manning, because he was his only son. And since I see in the 1920 census John Joslin listed as head of household with Morgan S Joslin living there, I have to assume that sometime between 1910 and 1920 the Joslin brothers took over from the Mannings. Since Morgan Manning died in 1914, we can assume that was when the Joslin brothers assumed ownership.
So S. Manning is Morgan S. Manning, because Sarah Manning is a Joslin (see below).
The 1920 census lists John N Joslin as head, with Morgan S. living there.
Harriet B. Manning outlived Morgan S. She's listed as a "head" in 1920, living with two other ladies, but they can't be living at the farm.
Morgan S. was listed in the 1912 paper as recovering from a serious illness. Morgan died Jan 1914, and wife Harriet died May 1920. Joseph Joslin had a wife named Winfred.
John and Morgan Joslin's parents were William and Sarah Manning Joslin. (She was born 1840.)
That's where the nephews came in, they were Morgan Manning's nephews.
